Frequenty Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about paintable wallcovering
What type of paint should I use?
Latex interior paint is recommended. Our testing indicated that a matte or flat finish yielded the best result, but this is an aesthetic choice. Please consult with your client on the desired look.
Can I paint without a primer?
No. Primer creates an even surface for painting and creates a barrier between the wallcovering and paint layer. This barrier will allow the paint to spread evenly across the surface and will prevent excess paint from being absorbed into the material.
Do I need a professional installer?
Yes. For best results, we recommend working with a professional installer. An experienced painter and installer will have the skill and precision to ensure the wallcovering is handled with care, delivering a beautifully tailored result - especially around trim, moldings, and architectural details.
How do you cut a clean line around trim and molding?
Our Washi wallcovering features a distinctive texture, which makes perfectly crisp lines around trim and molding difficult to achieve. This is a natural quality of the material. To create a more even transition, a light buildup of caulk at the trim can be used, or the trim can be painted to match the wall color for a seamless effect. This is an aesthetic decision best determined in collaboration with the client.
How do I maintain and clean painted wallcovering?
Washi wallcovering is crafted from handmade paper and should be cared for with a light touch. As needed, gently wipe the surface with a soft, dry cloth or use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment to remove dust and prevent buildup.
Can I touch-up paint after the installation is complete?
Touch-up paint can be applied later, however there may be a slight difference in finish or color, depending on the age of the original installation and if the same paint was used. Follow guidelines for touching up painted walls. In some cases, it may be necessary to repaint the full wall to attain color and finish consistency.
